Cracking the Cure for Childhood Brain Cancer

Childhood Brain Cancer is the deadliest form of cancer affecting kids under the age of 18. This topic area also receives the least source of funding and the Smashing Walnuts organization wants to shed more light on this topic and help find a cure.

Smashing Walnuts was created in honor of Gabriella Miller, a courageous 9-year-old who was diagnosed with DIPG – Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, an inoperable brain tumor. The tumor was the size of a walnut. Gabriella and her family became an advocate for children with cancer shortly after. Although she passed within a year of her diagnosis, Gabriella was able to make a huge impact within that time and raised thousands of dollars for childhood cancer. There are about 4400 children diagnosed with brain cancer every year in the United States. Within those 4400 cases, 20 percent of the children diagnosed will not survive 5 years. There has only been a total of 3 drugs developed to help combat this issue within the last 30 years. The organization continues to push toward finding a cure and support research efforts to give these courageous kids a fighting chance.
